On September 6, Xiaomi founder Lei Jun said in a post on Weibo that there is no absolute superiority between extended-range electric vehicles and pure electric vehicles when it comes to technology routes. What truly matters is the quality of the product experience.
Lei Jun said bluntly that extended-range electric vehicles have enormous potential. “This is not just Xiaomi’s view. In fact, peers such as Li Auto have repeatedly proven that consumers are willing to pay for excellent extended-range electric vehicles."
Xiaomi Pengcheng is set to officially launch this evening. Lei Jun revealed that Xiaomi Pengcheng is built on a purpose-developed extended-range electric vehicle system, addressing the common pain points of conventional EREVs at the fundamental level and delivering a disruptive experience for intelligent, highly flexible large-space SUVs.
First, the large-battery extended-range system delivers greater freedom for everyday travel. The Pengcheng lineup offers a CLTC pure-electric range of up to 505 km on the N70 Max, while the N90 Max delivers a maximum CLTC combined range of 1,705 km. The vehicles support RON 92 gasoline and offer strong compatibility with public charging stations, with a tested charging success rate of over 99%. With no particular requirements for fuel or charging facilities, users can simply get in and go.
Second, the spacious extended-range architecture delivers greater freedom in interior space. Although extended-range systems naturally take up additional room, Xiaomi Pengcheng has re-engineered the packaging to provide generous cabin space while still accommodating a large battery. The N70 series offers an exceptionally spacious second row and a large cargo area, while the N90 Max can seat seven occupants and still carry luggage for everyone.
Finally, Xiaomi says it has also addressed a number of long-standing pain points associated with extended-range vehicles. Fuel consumption with a depleted battery is as low as 5.7 L/100 km on the N70 Pro, helping reduce running costs. When the range extender engages while driving, the increase in cabin noise is less than 1 decibel, helping maintain a quiet ride. After the initial service, the range extender only requires maintenance once every three years or 30,000 km, making ownership more convenient.
According to Xiaomi’s latest figures, cumulative deliveries of Xiaomi vehicles have now exceeded 800,000 units.
