On August 21, at the 29th Chengdu International Motor Show, SAIC Volkswagen officially launched the ID. ERA 5S, positioned as a German-engineered intelligent hybrid family sedan. Five variants are available—Pure, Neo, Pro, Pro Pilot and Max—with official prices ranging from RMB 119,900 to RMB 149,900.
As the first sedan in SAIC Volkswagen’s ID. ERA family, the ID. ERA 5S is built around three core strengths: Xingyun Intelligent Driving, Golden Standard quality, and the Golden Hybrid system, aiming to set a new benchmark for all-round family sedans in the new era.
To celebrate the launch, SAIC Volkswagen is offering five purchase incentives. Customers can enjoy a RMB 4,000 deposit bonus by paying RMB 1,000 toward RMB 5,000 of the final payment, an RMB 8,000 trade-in incentive, a RMB 5,000 insurance subsidy, and a RMB 5,000 purchase tax subsidy. In addition, the company has introduced an “18 Million Family Sedan Customer Appreciation Offer,” providing an extra RMB 8,000 final-payment discount for orders placed by September 30.
With all five incentives combined, the ID. ERA 5S lineup is available at limited-time launch prices ranging from RMB 89,900 to RMB 119,900.
Beyond the purchase incentives, SAIC Volkswagen has prepared a range of additional benefits for ID. ERA 5S customers. These include a Flexible Finance Offer with zero down payment options and low-interest financing for up to five years; an Intelligent Driving Protection Package with RMB 3 million in coverage for the advanced driver-assistance system; a Connectivity Package offering lifetime free basic data plus 6GB of general-purpose data per month for three years for first owners; an Exclusive Delivery Gift with a limited-edition delivery gift box; and a Lifetime Warranty Package providing first owners with a lifetime vehicle warranty.
The five ID. ERA 5S variants are clearly differentiated to meet the needs of different family users. In response to growing demand for advanced driver-assistance features, SAIC Volkswagen has added the new Pro Pilot version, making urban NOA more accessible.
The Max and Pro Pilot variants offer functions including urban NOA, highway NOA and intelligent parking assistance. The Pro focuses on comfort, featuring heated seats throughout the cabin, front-seat massage, ventilation and power adjustment, as well as a large panoramic glass roof.
The Neo balances intelligence, practicality and affordability, and comes equipped with the Golden Hybrid system, L2-level driver assistance and a 540-degree panoramic camera system. The Pure version emphasizes high-value everyday usability, with features including a 15.6-inch 2.5K high-resolution central display, broad smartphone connectivity and four-wheel independent suspension.
In terms of dimensions, the ID. ERA 5S measures 4,836 mm in length, 1,880 mm in width and 1,505 mm in height, with a 2,766 mm wheelbase. Combined with an impressive 68% cabin space utilization rate, it provides 136 mm of rear knee room and a 388 mm-wide flat rear floor area, creating a spacious and comfortable passenger environment.
The vehicle also offers 35 thoughtfully designed storage compartments and a 486-liter trunk. With the rear seats folded down, the cargo area can be extended to accommodate items up to 2 meters long. From daily commuting and weekend getaways to long-distance road trips, the ID. ERA 5S is designed to meet a wide range of family mobility needs.
Safety is a fundamental principle of SAIC Volkswagen’s vehicle development and a firm commitment to its customers. The company rejects the idea of “rush-built cars.” The ID. ERA 5S follows the same Golden Standard as the flagship ID. ERA 9X, with more than 8,000 validation criteria applied throughout vehicle development.
This includes the rigorous “Two Winters, Two Summers” validation program, covering extreme temperatures from -40°C to 50°C. Vehicles undergo 12 weeks and 30,000 km of real-world testing in both severe heat and extreme cold to ensure reliable and consistent driving range across different seasons and road conditions.
By identifying and resolving potential issues during the R&D stage, SAIC Volkswagen aims to ensure that product quality is never compromised simply to accelerate development timelines.
In terms of body safety and long-term durability, 86% of the ID. ERA 5S body structure is made of high-strength steel, including 30% hot-formed steel, creating a robust passenger safety cell. The vehicle also adopts anti-corrosion measures such as cavity wax injection and extensive use of galvanized steel panels. Its battery pack has passed a 1,008-hour salt spray test, seven times longer than the national standard requirement, further enhancing durability over long-term ownership.
As the first Volkswagen-brand sedan globally to support urban NOA, the ID. ERA 5S marks a major step forward in intelligent driving for joint-venture vehicles. Its Xingyun Intelligent Driving system was jointly developed and deeply customized by SAIC Volkswagen and Corechi, based on Horizon Robotics’ high-performance Journey-series chips and powered by the GAIA 2.0 world model and HS8 end-to-end large model.
The system has undergone real-world testing in highly challenging environments, including Chongqing’s complex multi-level road network and cliff-hugging mountain roads in Wuxi. These tests help enhance its ability to anticipate road scenarios and make dynamic driving decisions.
Its intelligent driving functions cover a wide range of scenarios, including urban NOA, highway NOA, APA automated parking, AVP memory parking, narrow-road assistance, reverse trajectory tracking, a 540-degree panoramic view, and AEB emergency braking at speeds of up to 140 km/h. By bringing advanced driver-assistance technologies typically found in RMB 300,000-class vehicles into the RMB 120,000 family-car segment, the ID. ERA 5S makes higher-level intelligent driving more accessible to mainstream households.
To address common family-car concerns such as high commuting costs and range anxiety on long-distance journeys, the ID. ERA 5S is equipped with Volkswagen’s Golden Hybrid system, allowing users to enjoy both economical daily driving and long-distance capability without compromise.
According to testing by CATARC, the ID. ERA 5S achieved a real-world combined driving range of 2,033.8 km, reaching 101.6% of its rated figure. Its measured pure-electric range reached 207.5 km, or 129.6% of the rated figure, while combined fuel consumption was just 1.25 L/100 km. The vehicle also received a Level 1 Vehicle Energy Efficiency Certificate.
This means daily commuting can be handled primarily in electric mode, helping reduce routine running costs, while long-distance travel requires fewer fuel and charging stops.
Behind this performance is a 1.5L dedicated hybrid engine, a highly integrated 18-in-1 hybrid transmission, and an intelligent energy management strategy. Together, they create what SAIC Volkswagen calls a “golden triangle balance” of efficiency, performance and refinement.
